What Is Ethereum? ETH Explained and How to Use It on Highrollz
Ethereum is a blockchain network designed to support digital payments, smart contracts, decentralized applications, and other blockchain-based services. Its native cryptocurrency is called Ether (ETH).
Ethereum is one of the most widely used blockchain ecosystems in crypto and plays a major role in areas such as DeFi, NFTs, Web3 applications, token issuance, and digital payments.
Highrollz supports ETH, allowing players to deposit Ethereum and use their account across eligible casino games, live casino, Highrollz Originals, sports betting, live betting, and esports.
In this guide, we explain what Ethereum is, how ETH works, what gas fees are, how Ethereum differs from Bitcoin, and how to use ETH on Highrollz.
What Is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain network that allows developers to build and run applications using blockchain technology.
Unlike a traditional website or application that depends entirely on centralized servers, Ethereum applications can use smart contracts that run directly on the blockchain.
The native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum network is called Ether, usually displayed using the ticker ETH.
ETH is used to:
Pay blockchain transaction fees
Transfer value between wallets
Interact with decentralized applications
Participate in staking
Use services built on Ethereum
Fund supported crypto platforms
What Is ETH?
ETH is the native digital asset of Ethereum.
The terms Ethereum and ETH are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, but technically they refer to different things:
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ethereum | The blockchain network and wider technology ecosystem. |
| ETH | The native cryptocurrency used on the Ethereum network. |
So when someone says they are buying Ethereum, they usually mean they are buying ETH.
How Does Ethereum Work?
Ethereum records transactions and smart contract activity on a distributed blockchain maintained by a network of validators.
When a user sends ETH or interacts with an application, the transaction is submitted to the network for processing.
Once validated, the transaction becomes part of Ethereum's blockchain history.
Ethereum uses a Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, where validators help secure the network by staking ETH.
What Are Smart Contracts?
Smart contracts are programs stored and executed on a blockchain.
They can automatically perform actions when certain conditions are met.
For example, smart contracts can be used for:
Decentralized exchanges
Digital lending
NFT marketplaces
Blockchain games
Token issuance
Payments
Web3 applications
This programmable functionality is one of the main differences between Ethereum and blockchains designed primarily around digital payments.
What Are Ethereum Gas Fees?
When users make transactions or interact with applications on Ethereum, they generally pay a blockchain transaction fee known as gas.
Gas fees compensate the network for processing and validating blockchain activity.
The amount paid can vary depending on:
Network demand
Transaction complexity
Current blockchain activity
The type of interaction being performed
During periods of heavy activity, Ethereum gas fees can become more expensive.
This is one reason users should always review the estimated network fee before confirming an ETH transaction.
What Is ETH Used For?
ETH has several roles within the Ethereum ecosystem.
| Use of ETH | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Gas Fees | ETH is used to pay for transactions and smart contract activity on Ethereum. |
| Transfers | ETH can be sent between compatible cryptocurrency wallets. |
| Staking | ETH can be staked as part of Ethereum's Proof of Stake system. |
| Web3 Applications | ETH is used across many decentralized applications and blockchain services. |
| Crypto Casino Deposits | ETH can be used to fund supported casino and sportsbook accounts such as Highrollz. |
Why Is Ethereum So Popular?
Ethereum became one of the largest blockchain ecosystems because it allows developers to build applications directly on top of the network.
Its popularity comes from several factors:
A large developer ecosystem
Wide support across wallets and exchanges
Smart contract functionality
Strong adoption in decentralized finance
Use in NFTs and blockchain gaming
Large number of tokens and applications built around Ethereum
For users who already participate in the Ethereum ecosystem, ETH is often one of the most familiar cryptocurrencies to transfer between platforms.
Ethereum vs Bitcoin
Ethereum and Bitcoin are both major blockchain networks, but they were designed with different priorities.
| Feature | Ethereum | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Native Asset | ETH | BTC |
| Primary Focus | Smart contracts and decentralized applications | Decentralized digital money and value transfer |
| Consensus | Proof of Stake | Proof of Work |
| Programmability | Extensive smart contract functionality | More focused on Bitcoin transactions and monetary functionality |

Ethereum vs Solana
Ethereum and Solana are both programmable blockchain networks that support decentralized applications.
Ethereum has a large and long-established developer ecosystem, while Solana has become known for high transaction throughput and relatively low network fees.
| Feature | Ethereum | Solana |
|---|---|---|
| Native Coin | ETH | SOL |
| Main Strength | Large ecosystem and smart contract infrastructure | Fast transactions and low network costs |
| Developer Ecosystem | Very large and established | Large and growing |
You can learn more in our guide to what Solana is and how SOL works.
What Are the Advantages of Ethereum?
Ethereum has several characteristics that have helped make it one of the most widely used blockchain networks.
Large global developer community
Broad support across cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges
Smart contract functionality
Large decentralized finance ecosystem
Support for many blockchain-based tokens and applications

ETH vs Stablecoins for Casino Deposits
One important difference between ETH and stablecoins such as USDT or USDC is price volatility.
ETH is a market-traded cryptocurrency, so its value can rise or fall significantly.
If you deposit ETH and the market price changes, the dollar-equivalent value of your crypto can also change even if you have not placed a bet.
Stablecoins are designed to reduce this effect by maintaining a value closer to the US dollar.
The choice does not affect game odds. It only changes how the underlying cryptocurrency value behaves.
Does Using ETH Change Casino Odds?
No.
Depositing with Ethereum does not improve or reduce your chances of winning.
Casino RTP, house edge, sportsbook odds, and game mechanics remain the same regardless of whether you deposit using ETH, BTC, SOL, BNB, USDT, or another supported cryptocurrency.
